Brendan Stater-West Saumur Blanc 2020

$70.00

A wonderful example of chenin, showcasing the varietal’s richness and nerve. Smoky and earthy, with tangy citrus, white peach, kiwifruit, Indian spices, honey and apricot. Medium to full bodied, with a current of acidity, adding shape and structure. Faint peach skin texture, woven with the most pure and translucent fruit. Waters Wine Co

A Portland émigré, Brendan Stater-West joined Domaine Guiberteau in 2011, going on to become an indispensable part of the team. In early 2015 he took control of a single hectare of organically-farmed vines in Bizay, Les Chapaudaises, located just south of Brézé, in order to make some of his own wine. The vineyard, replanted in 2002, is next door to the Clos de Guichaux below, and the soils comprise a skinny layer of loamy clay over the classic limestone of the region, tuffeau.

The grapes are simply whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine stays on its lees for six months before bottling. This is a cracking Saumur Blanc: pulpy, pure and mineral with zesty acidity, juicy notes of mouth-watering pineapple and pear, and a crisp, salty finish. Just magic.
