“This wine is a blend of Mâcon-Chardonnay, Viré-Clessé, St-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé. Pale colour with a lime tint. Fresh apples with a little sucrosity, around fresh fruit aromatics, with fine length. The overall effect is harmonious and delivers far more than you can expect from a humble Mâcon-Villages.” Five Star Wine. 89 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
This great value, organic wine is an assemblage from several Bret Brothers parcels based in Mâcon-Fuissé and Chaintré, and also from Viré-Clessé La Verchère, Saint-Véran En Combe and Pouilly-Fuissé En Carementrant. The vines average almost 50 years of age, so know their job! So, some excellent terroirs that are blended with the idea to create a good value primer to the vintage. In addition, the last 50 litres of each of La Soufrandière’s unfiltered cuvées are blended into this Mâcon-Villages.
The wines are fermented wild and raised mostly in tank, with 10% aged in older barriques for 11 months before bottling. It may be only what the French call l’entrée de gamme, but the level here sets some marker! Crystalline stone fruit, red apple and white pepper aromas flowing through a delicious and crunchy palate. Enveloping depth and texture is perfectly harnessed by bright acidity. Great cut and focus.
