2017 is the first ever release of the Mother’s Shiraz. It has an intense aromatic profile that is very true to the Tyrrell’s style with an abundance of summer fruits. The palate is fresh and juicy with only the subtle influence of oak.
Mother’s vineyard is situated adjacent to Chris and Tegan Tyrrell’s house and has always been known as Mother’s after Murray Tyrrell’s mother who lived there. This block was replanted in 2010 with cuttings from 4 Acres, Johnno’s and Old Patch ensuring that Tyrrell’s best Shiraz vineyard clones are preserved.
The 2017 growing season was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant the vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when harvested. The Mother’s was the last Shiraz of the vintage to be harvested. Handpicked and made in the same fashion as Tyrrell’s other top Shiraz wines. Matured in a single three-year-old French oak cask (2700L) for 15 months.

As always, Bondar’s Violet Hour Shiraz is handpicked from the Rayner vineyard. A blend of block vines, both young and old (some up to 70 years old). Wild fermented naturally with a high portion of whole-bunches and matured in older French oak (no new barrels were used this year). The wine spent six months resting […]
Add to cartAromas of cherry, violet, plum, chocolate and woody notes. Intense and full bodied, a real attack of flavour. Enveloping with red fruits, the most in this lineup, blackberry, mulberry, chocolate, vanilla, fennel and wood char. Round in shape, fleshy and driven with lively acidity and lacey, chalky tannins. For all its size, this is remarkably […]
Add to cart Producer: Greenock CreekThe 2017 was the first Hochkirch Syrah we tasted. Revelatory; unique and detailed, we simply could not believe this was an Australian wine. The 2021 is a little deeper, with slightly darker blackberry fruit, structure, fine detail, gamey notes, freshness and a compelling herbal and spicy lift. Very fine, moreish and refreshing. Waters Wine Co […]
Add to cart Producer: HochkirchThe only thing wrong with this wine, sourced from a 0.38-hectare vineyard in Cape Town, is that there’s so little of it, owing to the size of the parcel and the strong prevailing winds. Pure, taut, focused and refined, it’s peppery, herbal, graceful and red-fruited, with a delicacy and elegance that wouldn’t look out of […]
