The Savage Red 2020 is a pure Syrah sourced exclusively from prime organically grown Stellenbosch vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils. The grapes were spontaneously fermented from wild yeasts using 50% whole clusters spending 3 to 4 weeks on skins. The wine spends 12 months in 500 litre barrels followed by a further 10 months in foudre.
Despite all the dark youthful broody density, the wine displays a gloriously perfumed aromatic profile that rises out the glass effortlessly to reveal expressive notes of lavender, sweet lilies, ripe red plum, stewed mulberries and strawberry compote before singed sandalwood, dried rosemary and thyme herbal nuances.
The palate is broad and elegantly textured with plenty of sweet, sumptuous upfront red and black berry fruits, a savoury steak tartar meaty complexity, black peppercorns and a granitic infused mineral finish. Wonderfully polished sweet plush tannins make this a seriously generous wine that will offer rewarding drinking on release, but that will undoubtedly be cellar worthy for another 10 to 12+ years of development. – 95 Points, Greg Sherwood MW

Vibrant purple colour, with a lifted nose showing red fruits and Christmas cake spice. The palate has wonderful concentration and depth yet is still lively and fresh. Soft ripe tannins and piquant acidity drive and carry the wine. A wonderful example of the modern, medium bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz. Unbelievable complexity and detail for a […]
Add to cart Producer: Tyrrell'sThe 2017 was the first Hochkirch Syrah we tasted. Revelatory; unique and detailed, we simply could not believe this was an Australian wine. The 2021 is a little deeper, with slightly darker blackberry fruit, structure, fine detail, gamey notes, freshness and a compelling herbal and spicy lift. Very fine, moreish and refreshing. Add to cart Producer: HochkirchAs always, Bondar’s Violet Hour Shiraz is handpicked from the Rayner vineyard. A blend of block vines, both young and old (some up to 70 years old). Wild fermented naturally with a high portion of whole-bunches and matured in older French oak (no new barrels were used this year). The wine spent six months resting […]
Add to cart2017 is the first ever release of the Mother’s Shiraz. It has an intense aromatic profile that is very true to the Tyrrell’s style with an abundance of summer fruits. The palate is fresh and juicy with only the subtle influence of oak. Mother’s vineyard is situated adjacent to Chris and Tegan Tyrrell’s house and […]
