Metzer Family Shiraz 2019

100% Syrah. The wine is an assemblage of two unique parcels situated high up on the Helderberg West Peak; the highest of which is at 300 metres above sea level.

The wine shows pronounced floral notes backed up by white pepper, lilies and violets as well as a hint of olive. Notes of dried flowers are folded into the background. The palate is powerful yet graceful featuring ripe fruit complemented by savoury notes which keeps the wine balanced. The stems from the whole bunch portion add a chalky texture while at the same time maintaining freshness.

Producer Profile

It’s all about the fruit. No doubt about it, Metzer Family captures the enduring legacy of South African wines, expressed through tiny old vines parcels. Situated in Stellenbosch and established in 2006, the vineyards are predominantly in the vicinity of Helderberg mountain, but include a parcel of Chenin Blanc and Cinsault 4km’s from False Bay.

The vineyards are dry grown and the grapes handpicked and sorted. Fermentation is entirely natural and slow, with the red usually cold soaked beforehand. Ageing is in French barrels, almost all old, the whites seeing a touch of skin contact and spending around 9 months on lees. The reds are not fined or filtered, whilst the whites undergo a coarse filtration, that brightens and intensifies the fruit’s characteristics.

The wines are essentially varietal, with the exception of the Mantra, a Shiraz/Cinsault blend from two different vineyards. The vineyard definition is very apparent and the winemaking is best defined as non interventionist, ensuring wines of great expression.
