The holy red trinity of the Jura – Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir – Domaine de la Pinte’s La Capitaine 2016 is aged 18 months and topped up in old foudre. All Domaine de la Pinte reds are de-stemmed and macerated in concrete for a long time, up to 3 months sometimes. They are then pressed and moved by gravity to the very large old foudres for ageing up to 2 years.
Stunning, and a riposte to the insane prices of Burgundy. The colour light and yet the perfume signals serious attention is required. Fruit and varietal characters abound – cherry, fruit cake and tobacco in the Poulsard, earth and black fruits in the Pinot, plums in the Trousseau. There is plenty of depth, texture and structure with a scaffold of ripe tannin. Bloody bargain!
