Philippe Bravay’s domaine is tiny (only 5.5 hectares) and the vines are situated around the outskirts of the Châteauneuf du Pâpe AOP, in the lieu-dit Ferrand. His neighbours in this Northern fringe near Orange are Charvin, Marcoux and Beaucastel. La Ferrande is 100% Syrah, a grape that Philippe is intrigued by and so decided to bottle it separately as a Côtes du Rhône. As always, it’s a perfect wine in terms of ripeness, offering up excellent purity in its bouquet of blueberry, black raspberries, pepper, smoke, a hint of dark chocolate and a lovely base of stony soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and nicely plush with a fine core of fruit and silken tannins.
