0.39ha planted in 1952 and 1976 on a gentle southeast-facing slope, 250 m elevation, moderately deep, brown clay soil over limestone. 100% de-stemmed, 2-3-week ambient yeast fermentation, punch-downs and pump-overs, aged for 18 months in barrels (10-20% new), no fining or filtration.
‘The 2022 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a pretty, quite effervescent nose with Morello cherries, wild strawberry and wilted rose petal scents, delicate but with plenty of energy. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grain tannins, very harmonious and silky smooth, with a lacy structure on the finish. This is going to be VERY tempting in its youth. Drink 2026-2042’ (91-93) points, Neal Martin, Vinous Oct 2023
‘The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans is rich and layered, exhibiting aromas of cherries, sweet spices, orange zest and peony. Medium to full-bodied, deep and enveloping, it’s built around sweet, powdery tannins.’ 92-93 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate Jan 2024
‘A glowing mid purple, much more density than Pitures as more clay in the soil. Impressive energy on the nose. This is gorgeous, with a supple but concentrated expression of red berry fruit which fills the palate and covers any tannins at the finish. Very typical Volnay with more presence this year than I can remember. Best they have ever made? I certainly cannot remember a more impressive Mitans. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Dec 2023.’ 5 STAR WINE 93-96 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
‘ A more elegant and airier nose is comprised by very fresh aromas of mostly red berry, floral and spice wisps. The caressing and lacy yet nicely punchy and rich middleweight flavors possess a lovely sense of harmony on the moderately firm and beautifully balanced finale that stays on the palate an impressively long time. This is lovely and understated, in fact, it’s very Mitans. Drink 2030+ ’ SWEET SPOT – OUTSTANDING! 91-94 points, BURGHOUND.COM APR 2024

A full succulent raspberry and fresh plum […]

The evolution of this site and wine is complexing, gone are the days of words being used like bold, brash and muscular. Now two decades of releasing the wine, the description is fine, vibrate and ethereal. This wine has a retained nose for the moment, but the mouthfeel is almost jubilant in comparison. Even against […]

Natural cork. With both this cuvée and the wonderful Rugiens-Hauts, Leroux is back in Pommard with a bang. The 2019 is a blend of Les Vaumuriens (high on the slope) and Les Cras (on the lower slope), both vineyards lying on the Volnay side of the village. Leroux notes the cooler, hillside fruit from Les Vaumuriens brings freshness and balance to the blend. […]

A terrific follow up to the excellent 2019 with notes of blackcurrant, dark cherry, blackberry, sandalwood, baking spices and plum. Medium bodied, plush, succulent and sappy. The oak frames the wine nicely and is beautifully integrated. It’s delicate and pretty, the fruit sweet and tangy. Tannins are long, drawn out, powdery and soft. Very fine […]
