This is Mortet’s ‘super Gevrey’ and comes from a clutch of five brilliantly placed plots that Denis Mortet deliberately chose for the quality of their terroirs and vines. The vineyards include En Motrot, situated between the church and Château de Gevrey-Chambertin close to Clos Saint-Jacques; Au Vellé, very close-by under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus, situated at the top of the Brochon slope just north-east of Gevrey itself; En Champs directly below Gevrey’s 1er Cru Champeaux (the vines here are over 70 years old); and En Dérée, below En Champs on the Brochon border.
Only 25% new barrels were used here and one third whole berries (hand-destemmed).
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs is especially elegant and charming in this vintage, bursting with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with sweet spices and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with fine concentration and a chassis of powdery structuring tannins that discreetly remind us of this cuvée’s Brochon origins on the finish, it’s seamless and complete. 92 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin “Mes Cinq Terroirs” possesses darker fruit than the Cuvée de Très Vieilles Vignes, blackberry commingled with bilberry and briary, more sous-bois characteristics and a very light slate-like aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins. This feels very harmonious with an almost satin-like texture, gentle grip with superb tension on the finish. This has always been one of Mortet’s best “entry-level” cuvées and this has real class and pixelation. Give it 2-3 years in bottle for it to show its best. Wonderful. 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
Five-star wine Dense purple, with a reserved nose, which is biding its time, nonetheless suggesting that all is in place. The fruit profile sits perfectly on the cusp of red and black, with a touch of liquorice, excellent length, and an admirable finish. I love the reserved quality of this wine, which will develop beautifully in the long term. 92-95 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
Outstanding, top value This is at once earthier and more reserved with its combination of red and dark berries along with hints of game, underbrush and a forest floor character. There is a bit more volume to the dense and intense medium-bodied flavors that also exude evident minerality on the chiseled and wonderfully refreshing finish. The supporting tannins are noticeably firmer, and this is going to require at least some patience. Recommended as this too is an excellent villages. 90-92 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

Star anise, sweet English summer fruits, Bresaola, lavender and damp leaf. Sweet and tangy fruits, picked at the perfect moment, serpentine, supple, brooding and haunting. Every sniff and sip reveals something different. Serrano, blood orange, chocolate, Middle Eastern spice and long silky tannins that tighten along the finish. Exquisite balance, the wine in constant motion. […]

Add to cartLamarche’s 1.35 hectares of vineyards in the Clos de Vougeot are situated over three terroirs: one is at the top of the Clos near the Château (actually there are two small parcels in the area known as Montiotes Hautes); another is in the middle tranche on the Vosne side (Petits Maupertuis); and the remaining parcel is […]
Add to cart Producer: Francois LamarcheThe latest rendition of a cuvée that goes from strength to strength, Glantenay‘s old vine 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Saussilles offers up notions of Griotte cherries, cassis, potpourri and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, racy and concentrated, with superb depth at the core and a saline finish, it’s well worth seeking out. As I’ve written […]
