Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes 2018

Five-star wine. From two plots one on black earth and yellow marl in parts, one on the stones in Champs des Charmes which he has had since 2014. Rich bright purple, fine ripe but balanced nose, an exquisite quality of fruit, finer to my mind than the more chunky Marsannay. Not a hint of rusticity here. 90-92 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2018 Fixin Vieilles Vignes displays aromas of plums, berries and dried flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and mineral palate that’s precise and elegant. This old-vine cuvée, derived from two complementary parcels, is quintessential Fixin. 89-91 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

This Domaine has long-produced a Fixin from a tiny, 0.32-hectare single parcel in Les Champs Pennebaut, a terroir located midway up the hill on the Marsannay side of the villageRecently Mortet also purchased a parcel of old vines (60-70 years old) in the southern part of Fixin, on the border of the Gevrey AOC in a vineyard called Les Champs de Charmes. From 2013, this parcel has been a part of the blend. Both sites have the classic clay/limestone soils of the Côte d’Or, though the northern soils are considerably darker.
