CRFT Whisson Lake Pinot Noir 2021

$45.00

I’m not sure if there’s a better pinot noir vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, but I doubt it. I love the fact that for all the comparisons with Burgundy, the pinots from Whisson Lake are entire unto themselves. Soaring aromatics of rhubarb, spiced plum, cranberry, cherry, geranium, lavender and star anise. Voluptuous curvy palate. Mouth coating, sensual and velvet. Whisson Lake pinots absorb new oak beautifully, in this case 25% French. Middle Eastern five spice dust the palate adding additional textural intrigue, whilst the whole bunches pull the palate sideways, offering width. A thoroughly enjoyable, compelling and unique wine of so much interest and pleasure. Waters Wine Co

Hand-made at CRFT Carey Gully winery. 100% Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir. Cold soaked followed by wild fermentation in an open-top tank with 25% whole bunch. Pressed to barrel once dry for wild malolactic fermentation and maturation. Occasional battonage. Matured for 9 months in 100% French oak, 25% new oak. Winemaker’s Notes

Hand-picked fruit, wild fermented with 25% whole bunches; matured 9 months in French oak (25% new). Whole bunches are fully absorbed without complaint, ditto the oak, as quality fruit takes control. Feels smooth and just right for the pricepoint, contributing a sense of complexity and immediate gratification led by deep red fruits, bramble, anise and violets. Keeps the fruit intensity going aided by firm, savoury tannins. 91 Points – Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion

Producer Profile

CRFT Wines (pronounced croft) was founded in 2012 by winemakers Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries. Sourcing fruit from 10 single vineyards across the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley, they make wines from established varietals and relative newcomers. Indeed CRFT are pioneers of Mencia and Gruner Veltliner, their’s unsurpassed in Australia.

CRFT displays the diversity of the Adelaide Hills wine region beautifully, the wines made traditionally and as naturally as possible, sulphur, the only addition. Vineyard definition is key here and the best way to taste the wines is together – to note the very real differences, even though in some cases the vineyards are separated by only a few metres.

All the CRFT wines are exceptional and cannot be beaten for their value for money. The reds, Pinot Noir, Mencia and Shiraz are generous in flavour, with sleek lines, mouthwatering acidity and long savoury tannins. They are energetic and buoyant, compact, coiled and marvelously balanced. The whites too are rich in flavour, with terrific mid-palate stuffing and long frames, carried along by minerals, texture and natural acidity.
