Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Rouge 2018

Warmer, drier vintages, coupled with low yields, have benefitted greatly Bourgogne offerings. Vineyards that didn’t have quite the right aspect, soils or elevation often struggled to produce wines with real force and character. There was a reason why they were not highly regarded vineyards. Bachelot- Monnot’s Bourgogne offerings, red and white, have been up there with the very best, offering terrific value for money. The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge is the best example we have seen. Expressive, bright, juicy and with a richness rarely seen at this level. Brambly fruits, with spiced plum and flowers there is an abundance of tangy acidity and ripe, assertive tannins. You can drink this now to be sure, but try and hold onto a few bottles for three years or so. Waters Wine Co.

This bright and juicy Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Rouge is drawn from three parcels: one-third comes from some old vines in the Hautes-Côtes; another third from vines in Maranges (villages level); and the remainder from a Bourgogne parcel on the edge of Puligny-Montrachet. The Puligny component brings perfume, the Maranges brings depth of fruit, and the Hautes-Côtes brings the structure and, again, plenty of high-grown perfume. The vine age of these sites is seriously impressive for a red of this level, with 60-, 70- and 80-year-old vines contributing to the blend. Distributor notes.

Naturally fermented in concrete tanks with roughly 15% whole bunches, the 2018 Bourgogne Rouge was aged only in used barrels as Marc Bachelet felt the generous fruit of the vintage required no new oak.

The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge offers pleasant light tertiary/undergrowth scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins on the entry, dark berry fruit laced with brine, leading to a cohesive, slightly sinewy finish. Fine. 87 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

A pretty, airy and nicely fresh nose reflects notes of both red and dark pinot fruit that is trimmed in touches of earth and violet. The delicious and relatively vibrant lighter weight flavors are not especially dense, but they are refreshing on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. 86-88 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound
