Josetta Saffirio Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2018

$50.00

Explosive, perfumed and pretty. How many wines are a combination of all three? Hardly any, but there’s one here with notes of blood orange, smoke, blueberry, blackberry, cassis and kirsch. Awash with juicy, vivid and vibrant flavours. Bright red fruits, spice, earth and melting tannins, leading to a squeeze of chalkiness. Pretty with guts, I cannot imagine any red wine drinker not loving this. Waters Wine Co

Grown in the Monforte d’Alba-Castelletto subzone on a steep slope of silt, clay and sand, rich in minerals and limestone. The 2018 was gently pressed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks and macerated for eight to 10 days. It was aged in traditional large French oak barrels for 12 months and had three additional months’ rest in concrete tanks before bottling.

“Mint and dill on a cool, introvert nose, but it’s a Jeyll-and-Hyde turn-around on the palate. Damson-jam intensity and ready to explode with the pent-up energy of the acidity. Nothing introvert about this! Sinews clad in velvet, souk spices and an undertow of roast mushrooms, but above all it is imbued with this fierce Cirque-du-Soleil-acrobatic vitality. And then the finish is quieter – notes of sous bois and mushroom compost linger gently.”  17 out of 20 – Tamlyn Currin, Jancisrobinson.com
