Saltfleet Grenache 2023

$40.00

Saltfleet’s Grenache is a more generous style. Stunning aromatics of English summer fruits, Middle Eastern spices, milk chocolate, cola, compost and campfire. Rich and generous, really mouth filling, but not heavy. Lovely fleshy fruit and mid palate pulp, all wrapped up in rich tannins and bright acidity. Utterly gorgeous drinking. Waters Wine Co

From two sites in Blewitt Springs; one the Brini Vineyard, and the other a site on Moritz Road; 20% whole bunch ferment; 10 months in 10-year-old French puncheons. There’s a wild-fruited tautness to this, an imprint of the chill season, which yields a refined direction. That’s allied with a savouriness of flavour, underpinned by a sandy, pithy draw of tannin and resolute acidity. Cranberry and cherry, pressed wildflowers, tart redcurrant, subdued souk spices, sun-warmed bricks, bergamot. Air is a friend, and the wine uncoils beautifully, so poised, with no sweet spot, the tannins respectfully incisive. Very good. 95 points – Halliday Wine Companion

Sourced from two Blewitt Springs vineyards — The Brini Vineyard, which sits at 160-200m elevation, and another remarkable site just down the road planted in 1924. Both are dry-grown bush vines rooted in deep sandy soils over ironstone.

The result is a wine of fruit concentration, perfume, and structure. Red-fruited and finely textured, with gritty tannins. This is a wine that speaks of elegance, place, and restraint. Saltfleet

Producer Profile

Locals of McLaren Vale, Jonny Cook and Kyle Egel met at high school, forming a vinous bond that has morphed into Saltfleet. The fruit’s local too, sourced from some of the finest sites in the region. The wines are handled minimally and gently, made in such tiny quantities (just a single barrel for most of the reds), the fruit has to be perfect and the winemaking on point. And so it is.

These are classically styled wines, a homage to McLaren Vale and a nod to the future with newer varietals to the region such as Fiano, Chenin Blanc and Touriga Nacional among the range. Richly fruited, succulent, vibrant, curvaceous and with great movement, Saltfleet are only a few vintages in and already making great wines with humble resources. No doubt about it, a star or two is born.
