Jean Foillard’s Côte du Py is as pure and captivating as Beaujolais gets. One of the iconic wines of contemporary France. The Côte du Py of Morgon is one of Beaujolais’ great vineyards and certainly its best known and Foillard is undoubtedly the master of the site. No one renders it with equal clarity, complexity or textural beauty.
Foillard’s rendition captures the wild cherry, mineral, and floral-tinged quality of the vineyard in an unparalleled way. He weaves silk into the texture and leaves a wine with haunting persistence and fragrance. 2021 is a vintage full of the sumptuous fruit and silky texture that Jean is always able to harness, the vintage providing fine concentration but the wines still show vibrant jellied red fruit, very attractive floral and spice aromas and caressingly silky mouthfeel – as always they all offer delicious succulence as young wines, and as always they are perfectly balanced.

Long and harmonious, the spirit in the background, but becoming more apparent along the palate. I love the powdery tannins that squeeze through on the finish. Texturally complex, but also […]

Select optionsBouland’s Morgon Bellevue Cailloux 2019 is made exactly the same way as all of the Bouland wines: natural, whole-bunch ferment, concrete tank/foudre élevage and no fining. This is fascinating to compare directly with the Sable (sand) cuvée. Here, there’s more plum and blackcurrant depths, and also a smoky, hot-rocks kind of mineral profile. Long and strong, […]
