Saltfleet Touriga Nacional 2023

$38.00

Touriga Nacional, a famous Portuguese variety adopted by McLaren Vale  An expressive floral aroma paired with a full bodied palate of black currants and dark cherries. Matured in larger format French oak to support the fruit and create a lingering finish that keeps you coming back for more. Saltfleet

“From a vineyard in Sellicks Hill, fermented in concrete as whole berries; matured in older French oak for 10 months. This feels like a reasonable precis of the Saltfleet style, with wines full-flavoured, though more medium-weighted, lifted and fragrant but savoury and earthy with it. Charming varietal florals, blue and deep red, scrubby dry herbs, amaro flashes, salted dark chocolate, spices – clove, allspice, star anise, cinnamon – a little olive, dehydrated blackberry, blueberry and wild raspberry, the palate silkily saline, flanked with ultrafine tannins, a burst of sour cherry and spices closing out. It’s a lovely example, rippling with flavour but effortless with it.” 93 points – Halliday Wine Companion

Producer Profile

Locals of McLaren Vale, Jonny Cook and Kyle Egel met at high school, forming a vinous bond that has morphed into Saltfleet. The fruit’s local too, sourced from some of the finest sites in the region. The wines are handled minimally and gently, made in such tiny quantities (just a single barrel for most of the reds), the fruit has to be perfect and the winemaking on point. And so it is.

These are classically styled wines, a homage to McLaren Vale and a nod to the future with newer varietals to the region such as Fiano, Chenin Blanc and Touriga Nacional among the range. Richly fruited, succulent, vibrant, curvaceous and with great movement, Saltfleet are only a few vintages in and already making great wines with humble resources. No doubt about it, a star or two is born.
