I am forever surprised at the lack of support for Cabernet Sauvignon and cabernet blends, particularly when I am lucky enough to sample Josh Coopers wonderful wines. Not as edgy or angular as his later released wines, this nonetheless has some wonderful rough hewn tannins and a back lift of bright acidity. Blackcurrant, plum, cherry, tobacco, violets and a touch of fresh earth lead onto a medium bodied palate. Bright, packed with energy and personality, this really is the ultimate lunch wine. No details other than a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and malbec. No matter, it’s a gorgeous wine, starting with its bright garnet hue shimmering with a flash of purple. It’s in a Claret vein, as in mid-weighted and light on its feet yet by no means simple. This comes full of juicy fruit, all cassis, blackberries and dark plums with flecks of herbs, chocolate Mint Thins and woodsy/tobacco notes. There’s a vivacity of youth thanks to its acidity, making this perfect luncheon drinking. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, made in a slightly softer and more fruit forward style than our other Cabernet wines, though with enough structure to enjoy both now or later. Bright garnet in colour, the Claret is full of blood plum, cassis and creamy black cherry fruit, while subtle tobacco, violet and iodine add complexity. Plush and full of purple berry fruit, the palate is light enough for luncheon drinking, yet also has enough stuffing and structure to take serious food matching, or some time in the cellar. Josh Cooper is the son of Nelly and Allan Cooper of Cobaw Ridge winery in the Macedon Ranges, a producer of incomparable regard. Interestingly, Josh sources his fruit from outside the family farm, but growing up in the Macedon Ranges he has an intimate knowledge of the region, its vineyards and growers. We have not yet come across a finer suite of negociant wines in Australia.

Bright, pure, translucent, textural, delicate and poised, with a long and lingering carry. Layered complexity, flavours and textures interwoven, seamlessly stitched, the balance is perfect, no flavour or texture dominating, an equality of components.

Beautiful flavours are one thing, but what elevates Josh Cooper’s wines into grandness is their texture, shape and tannin. Billowing, eddying – their shape all movement, pirouetting, rippling, and caressing. No wine feels as another, but they all share a gentle palate presence, a pelt of velvet, silk or longer woodier tannins.
