Sublime wine. Soaring perfume of red fruits, spice and hints of Rosemary. The palate is utterly seductive. Plush and soft with a wealth of red fruits and the slinkiest sveldt tannins that hold the wine’s notes perfectly. The most sensual Cabernet Franc that I can remember having and has challenged my preconceptions about this varietal. WWC, February 2019
The Clos de L’Echelier is one of only four vineyards in the Saumur-Champigny area still enclosed by a wall. At just under 2-hectares, much of the site is planted to Cabernet Franc with only 10% Chenin Blanc. The vines here are now reaching 40 years old. Following fermentation with a maximum percentage of whole berries (rather than bunches), Germain raises this cuvée in 12-hl Stockinger ovals. Generous and textured with abundant red cherry fruits. A beautifully made wine with exquisite depth and restrained power.
