Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot 2019

$80.00

If ever you were in any doubt about the capability of Cabernet Franc to stand alone, you need to taste this wine. Sleek, sappy and firm, with a vigour that forever holds its grip. Black and bramble fruits, Iris, sandalwood, iodine and minerals. Tense and vigorous, tight and coiled; you get the sense that it will take years to unravel this beauty, but when you do… I guess you could call it old fashioned, a wine for food with the ripest tannins and their unshakable grip. Rare to see such obvious power nowadays. Unbelievable. Waters Wine Co

Just outside the village, Clos Guillot sits on a slope on clay over limestone. The 2019 Chinon is a serious barrel sample that melts in your mouth with its silken texture. No crushing, very little remontage and a year in used barrels all lend a very gentle touch. The tannins build gradually, coating the mouth with the finest of chalky textures. Excellent acidity keeps things fresh through the finish. 95-97 points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous

It kicks off with an amazing color (apparent even in the gloom of the Baudry cellars), and the nose lifts this above the preceding cuvées with a firm mineral character to start, followed by smoky dried cherry and a little toasted pip, as well as some fragrant peony. The palate follows this lead with mineral thrust, perfumed, tense, dark and taut. Great energy here, the minerality persist through the middle, set in a polished and sinewy frame. Long and gripped in the finish, with tannin and more mineral edges. Very fine potential here. 94 points, Chris Kissack, The Wine Doctor
